How to: Get Travel Insurance

I think it’s just good smart math to get travel insurance unless you are unquestionably confident that nothing will derail your trip. My preferred provider is World Nomad - it’s easy, straightforward, and last I checked was extremely price competitive. Update: this is not available for active duty members of the US Armed Forces.

  1. Go to https://www.worldnomads.com and select “Get a Quote” button in the top right corner.

  2. Fill out the “Where are you from” drop down form. If anyone from outside of the US has used this, I’d be curious to hear how the experience is and if it’s different.

  3. Fill out the “Travel Plans”. Don’t be shy, enter every country you might visit. I default to France, Switzerland, Italy, Germany, Austria and Slovenia for my Alps seasons. You may consider dropping Germany and Slovenia if you are confident you won’t make a turn into those countries.

  4. Under date of first deposit, pick the very first date you paid for anything relating to this trip. Plane tickets are usually my first purchase, but my guests first purchase is often when they place their deposit with me.

  5. Fill out the rest of the form and hit “Next”. Easy as.

  6. Pick your plan. 80% of all summer trips will be fine with just the Standard - it covers everything you and I like to do up to 3000m (9800 feet). The Explorer policy covers climbing up to 6500m (21,325 feet), and all ski trips that I offer: guided skiing, heliskiing, backcountry skiing, and alpine ski touring.

  7. Your quote will be emailed to you - follow the steps provided to pay for it and you’re good to go!

What do you think - is there another travel insurance provider you like to use? Have you had any experience with World Nomads and making claims? Let me know in the comments!
