Spring Ski Tip: Stop Losing Your Ski Pole Baskets

It seems like most ski poles are sold with “resort” baskets that are too small for my liking. I prefer larger “powder” baskets instead.

Have you or one of your friends lost a ski pole basket? Most backcountry ski pole manufactures use a threaded system similar or even compatible with Black Diamond models, which is awesomely simple but also the cause for some confusion. When a one basket is “stacked” below the original basket, it remains on the threaded section and will eventually work off.

To do it right, pull the original basket while spinning the pole, until it catches the threads. Replace it with the new basket by pushing the basket while spinning the pole, until it catches on the thread. Spin in up the threads until it’s free-spinning. Now you’re good to go.

All of the baskets in my various repair kits were picked up off the trail. I’ve already found three this season!

I’m no where near done skiing this spring - with a normal snowpack, I’ll keep making turns until the 4th of July!
